October News
Late September saw the London Youth Games Southern Region Female Street Cricket competition. The final was played between Lambeth & Wandsworth with collectively 11 Spencer girls featuring - and with Spencer (Cricket & Netball) coaches on either side. Congrats to Wandsworth who came out on top, overturning a loss to Lambeth in the group stages. Proud of you all!
Congratulations to Spencer’s Gus Atkinson who took home ‘Most Improved Player’ at Surrey’s recent end of season awards. He originally signed in 2017, made his first class debut in 2020 and became a core part of the Surrey T20 team this year. All of us at Spencer wish him the best for 2022.
We end with the sad news of the death of Richard (Dick) Tarrant (standing next to the score top right after the Decca Cup victory in 1974). Joining the club as a junior in 1955, he played until 1977 scoring nearly 7,500 runs and between 1968 and 1974 missing only 3 league matches. He was a pupil at Emanuel School and his death comes close to the centenary of his family’s start at Spencer, his father Guy is the club’s record batter, with over 30,000 runs between 1925 and 1960. As well as the cup triumph above, another notable season for Dick was when he was 1st team captain in 1967 when the club won 13 and lost only 2 matches of 25 played. Although he contributed to the compilation of the Spencer history, he was too unwell to attend the launch this summer and our commiserations go to his family and friends. Dieu Defend Le Droit.
